That\u2019s the opinion of Vijay Pashad, a Marxist historian and researcher at the Tricontinental \u2013 Institute for Social Research.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a very important election. All processes like this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brasildefato.com.br\/2024\/07\/24\/filho-de-maduro-diz-que-se-perder-eleicao-governo-aceitara-e-sera-oposicao\">generate contradictions<\/a>. Venezuela is being suffocated, strangled by the United States, which creates problems for [the Venezuelan] people. I think he [Maduro] has done an excellent job of traveling through the country, making rallies, speeches, walking among the people, trying to explain to them that they have to unite against the attack on Venezuela,\u201d Prashad told <strong>Brasil de Fato<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On the eve of the election, voters have no thermometer to help them know which candidate has the best chance of winning. With very different results, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brasildefato.com.br\/2024\/07\/18\/a-10-dias-das-eleicoes-na-venezuela-pesquisas-indicam-cenario-incerto-e-pesquisadores-falam-em-empate-tecnico\">experts believe a technical tie is possible<\/a> even at this point.<\/p>\n<p>The figures don&#8217;t seem reliable. Today, some institutes put the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brasildefato.com.br\/2024\/05\/21\/desconhecido-sem-proposta-ou-carisma-conheca-o-candidato-fantoche-da-oposicao-na-venezuela\">opposition candidate and former ambassador Edmundo Gonz\u00e1lez Urrutia<\/a> up to 30 percentage points ahead of President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro, who is seeking reelection. Others indicate Maduro\u2019s victory by the same margin of 30 percentage points over the Unity Platform candidate. These polls were conducted by Delphos and Hinterlaces, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this scenario, Prashad is confident of Maduro&#8217;s reelection: \u201cThe opposition has a really terrible right-wing candidate. It&#8217;s unlikely \u2013 even if they call him \u201cgrandpa\u201d \u2013 that he will win.
